Obelisk Teaser

:!: This page was created to track the release of the Obelisk. For information about the product itself see Obelisk :!:

Obelisk is a new project the developers of Sia have been teasing.

It has been revealed that the Obelisk SC1 is a Siacoin mining ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit).

More information about Obelisk will be gradually released during the week of 19 to the 23rd of June. Lead developer David has promised that by the end of Friday everyone will know what Obelisk is all about.

All currently available information has been leaked through the #obelisk channel in the Sia Slack community (see the sidebar for a link to join the Slack).

June 18th

Lead developer David Vorick posted a strange logo in the Slack community, with the filename “obeliskComingSoon.png”.

A larger image was posted by Zach Herbert in the #announcements channel with the title “Coming soon. #obelisk” (this is the image at the top of this article), along with a link to a new Slack channel #obelisk. David then proceeded to release some subtle hints in that channel, which are logged below under Hints.

Zach also changed his Slack status to the Obelisk emoji with the message “Hello from Sia/Obelisk HQ in Boston!”, indicating that Obelisk is the second product the team is developing.

Another interesting detail is that the channel topic for the #obelisk channel is a link to the website which, at the time of writing, is just a blank page.

Taek42 talks about Obelisk on reddit:

We are trying something new with the way we roll out Obelisk, and we'll know based on the reaction when the full reveal happens whether it was a good way to launch Obelisk or not.
I'm happy to reassure everyone who is concerned that Obelisk is not a troll, and that it's also much more substantial than a weekend project. I can't promise that you will like it, but it is something big and substantial, and it is good for Sia and an important step for any Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency.

At 23:26 UTC (technically still the 19th), taek shared another picture in the #obelisk channel, showing some kind of integrated processing chip. This picture was immediately deleted from the logs and was later discovered (11:28 UTC) by Slack user “softlaunch” by looking in taek's upload history:

At 14:32 UTC a tweet is posted on the SiaTechHQ twitter feed using the same image with the following caption:

The Obelisk SC1 – the first ASIC built for Sia mining. (Source)

Later this day Taek42 posted a thread on reddit to answer the questions and doubts people have expressed since the Obelisk announcement: reddit post.

In this thread Taek has also confirmed that the price of a single ASIC will most likely be over 1000$ (source).

June 21st

Nothing particularly interesting happened.

June 22nd

David Vorick published a blog post explaining why ASICs are a good thing for Sia.

June 23rd

Finally Friday!

The website went live. On it is a countdown for the Obelisk presale, starting in 6 days.

14:20 UTC. The Obelisk website has revealed its menu items. There's an info page which shows The Obelisk SC1's stats:

PRICE: $2499

Taek42 has also posted a detailed post on reddit containing lots of information about the devices and plans.
